Boston City Lights at Night

Boston City Lights at Night

This photograph was taken from the top of the Prudential Building in Boston, Massachusetts.   The observatory from the top of the building is normally a 360 degree view, but on the night that I was there, they had half of the floor closed off for a private party which limited my options.  You can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the building in the foreground is another tower for the Prudential Center.  I did discover a neat trick while taking these pictures which I am going to share as my first blog tip.

My first photo tip:  I found the best way to get rid of reflections was to take my jacket and place it over my camera and hold it up against the window.  I found that this removed any interference with background lighting and reflections when you are taking pictures with a very long exposure.

Kelly - Although I had performed in this building as a child, I had never had a chance to see the building from this angle. It is a beautiful photo! Thank you for sharing!

Prudential - These photos are so amazing…………. What a great city………

My Ugly Photos - Thank you for the compliment, and yes, Boston is a great city.

Palm Beach Convention Center

Anyone who has gotten off of I-95 on Okeechobee has seen these across from City Place.  I have always wanted to take a HDR photograph of them. The building is located just outside of Downtown West Palm Beach, Florida.  I had rented the Canon Mark IV to take to Kennedy Space Center for the launch of the space shuttle.  Unfortunately, the launch was scrubbed several times and I never was able to take the photos, so I decided to drive around town and find something to take pictures of.  This is actually at the Palm Beach Convention center just at sunset.

Waking up at Monument Valley, Utah

This picture was taken approximately five miles north of Monument Valley, Utah at 6:00am, which was actually before the full sunrise had taken place.  While I was on my way to the Monument, I stopped along the road to take this photograph.  I pulled off the interstate onto an access road that had a little area set up for tourists to purchase local Indian sundries.  As you can imagine at that time of the morning the entire place was deserted except for one other photographer.  Apparently everyone else was smart enough to still be asleep.  After I took this photograph, I headed on to Monument Valley. Or attempted to at least.  I did not actually make it all the way to the Valley because a few miles south I saw a sand storm approaching the exact area that I was heading to.   The day before I took this photograph, I was in Canyon de Chelly and experienced my first sandstorm, which was enormous and really not something that I was interested in dealing with again.  As soon as I saw the storm approaching Monument Valley, I immediately turned around and headed back north.  I decided to head toward Arches National Park which is only supposed to be a 5 hour drive, but I was not able to make it until after sunset.  Why did I not make it?  That is for a later post.  Check back soon.

Sunrise Acadia National Park, Maine

This photograph was taken at Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park, Maine.  When the ocean is at less than a one foot swell, it sounds more like Whisper Hole and not Thunder Hole.  Being from Florida, I did not realize how much quicker the sunrise is in Maine.  After speaking with the owner of the bed and breakfast that I stayed in the night before, he told me that during the summer time is the best time to take these types pictures because the days (specifically sunrise and sunsets) last much longer.  This was taken in the beginning of December; and luckily it was the week after the northeast got hit with a huge winter storm and the week before they got hit with another one.  I discovered after getting into the park that most of the roads were closed due to the snow and regular winter road closings which made it an adventure to find spots to even take photographs.

Canyon de Chelly

This was taken on White House Trail halfway to the White House Ruins.  The beginning elevation for the trailhead was 6000 ft., to get to the point where this picture was taken, was 700 ft. straight down, which I figure because of the zig zag trail, ended up being 1200 ft.  The hike down the trail was not nearly as bad as the hike back up!  I liked the set up of this picture because of the darkness of the walls in contrast to the colors of the field.  It seems like a perfect HDR shot.  However, the most entertaining part of this photograph for me, is the wooden sign located on the lower left hand side that states, NO PHOTOGRAPHY.

Death Valley

This was taken was on a very interesting and exciting Christmas Day. I got a flat tire just outside of Beatty, Nevada, and let me tell you there is nothing more of an “OH CRAP” moment than getting a flat in the middle of the desert with no cell signal. The rental car company said my only option was to wait for a tow truck that would take about 3 hours to get to me and then another 3 hours to get back to Las Vegas.  My other option was to drive back to Vegas on a spare. I was very irritated with both options because my whole day was now ruined and Death Valley seemed to be out of the question. I decided to try and call an after hour tire shop number that I saw on the side of a garage. I originally thought going to Death Valley on Christmas Day was a great idea because there would be less tourists and traffic.  One thing I never considered was a tow truck driver saying well its Christmas and the service call will run me $75 just for him to look at it.  We struck a deal for $106, which was all the cash I had on me, and he brought me the crappiest, most worn out, used tire he had. After all was said and done he only charged me $75 and said it was the “Christmas Special”. Now that I had the spare tire, I decided to take a chance and take the long way back through Death Valley. Everything seemed to work out for the best because it had rained a few days prior and the valley floor had thin layer of water for the perfect reflection that you see in this photo.
